About Amtec
Amtec Medical was founded in 1987, with the name Advanced Medical Technology, as a research and development initiative involving Queen's University and Musgrave Park Hospital in Belfast. Musgrave had gained a reputation as one of the foremost orthopaedic centres in Europe.
From an idea conceived by Professor R.A.B Mollan at Musgrave the company developed a device called the Belfast Screener for the detection of Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT).
In 1996 the Belfast Screener was redesigned and re-branded as the Amtec Venometer. In 1997 the company moved from the hospital site into commercial premises and, under a new management and sales team, launched the Venometer in the UK market.
In 1999, the Venometer achieved Millennium Product Status (awarded by the Design Council) which recognises the product's high level of creativity and innovation. In 2004 Amtec launched the Waveform device for DVT prophylaxis during surgery. | ![]() |
In 2007 Amtec launched the Venometer V3, making the Venometer more sensitive for detecting DVT and opening up new markets within Primary Care.
